Finding the Best Hawaii Hikes on Oahu

Waterfalls tucked into lush valleys, ridgelines with sweeping ocean views, and crater hikes shaped by ancient eruptions, hikes on Oahu offer an incredible range of Hawaii landscapes all on one island. For travelers staying in vacation rentals or resorts on Oahu offered by Chase ‘N Rainbows, many of the most scenic trails in Hawaii are within easy reach!

4 Oahu Hikes to Experience the Island Beyond the Beach

1. Mānoa Falls Trail

This 1.8-mile round-trip route leads into a lush valley beneath the Ko‘olau Mountains. It moves through dense tropical growth, where bamboo groves, banyan trees, and towering ferns create a shaded, immersive landscape. Frequent rainfall keeps the valley vivid and green throughout the year, though it also means sections of the trail can be muddy.

At the end, Mānoa Falls drops roughly 100 feet down a moss-covered rock face, framed by steep, jungle-covered cliffs. The setting feels distinctly cinematic, which explains why this valley has appeared in several well-known films and television productions such as Jurassic Park.

2. Diamond Head Summit Trail

Few Oahu hikes are as recognizable as the Diamond Head Summit Trail. Rising above Waikīkī, this volcanic crater, known as Lēʻahi, has become one of the island’s most defining landmarks. Originally constructed in 1908 as part of O‘ahu’s coastal defense system, the route still reflects its history, with steep staircases, a lighted tunnel carved through volcanic rock, and preserved bunkers along the way.

At the top, the view opens across Waikīkī Beach, the Honolulu skyline, and the island’s southeastern coastline. During the winter months, humpback whales can sometimes be seen migrating through the waters offshore.

3. Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail (Lanikai Pillbox)

The Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail, often called the Lanikai Pillbox Hike, offers one of the most striking viewpoints among Oahu hikes. The trail climbs a narrow ridgeline above Lanikai Beach, leading to two World War II-era observation bunkers perched high above the coast.

While the hike is relatively short at about 1.7 miles round-trip, the steep, dirt path and exposed ridge add a moderate challenge. As you gain elevation, the view opens to reveal the vivid turquoise waters of Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands rising just offshore.

4. Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail

For sweeping coastal views, the Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail is another standout among hikes on Oahu. Located along the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, this paved trail climbs about two miles round-trip to a lookout set high above the southeastern coast.

Offshore islets dot the horizon and serve as protected habitats for seabirds, including frigatebirds and tropicbirds. From November through May, this trail also becomes one of the best places on the island to spot humpback whales as they migrate through Hawaiian waters.
