Haleakala
Though still considered an “active” volcano, Haleakala last erupted some time in the 1600’s, and is quite safe to visit. The bulk of this massive shield volcano is what created most of the island of Maui. While it’s hard to judge when you are staring up at it from anywhere else on the island, Haleakala rises to a height of 10,023 feet above see level. That would be considered a decent sized peak anywhere in the United States!
The name Haleakala means “house of the sun”, and was originally given by the Hawaiians to the area around the summit. It has since come to refer to the entire volcano. From the summit, you can look out over the island, or down into the other-worldy crater, a barren desert of lava and cinder cones. There are numerous trails winding in and out of the unique landscape, don’t miss out on the opportunity to descend into the depths of this incredible place!
If you are interested in a bigger adventure, you can arrange to stay in one of several cabins that are spread across the park, and access via several trail systems. This is perhaps the best way to view the variety of plants, animals and landscapes that make this park so special.
Many folks try to catch a sunrise on the summit, and most consider it one of the most beautiful experiences they’ve ever had. If you do try to visit Haleakala, be sure to check the weather before heading up. Believe it or not, the weather can be quite different up there, it’s even been known to snow from time to time! Also, be aware of the high altitude. Traveling from sea level to 10,000 feet in such a short time can present several health problems.
