With over 120 miles of coastline, hard to know where to start when you want to “go to the beach.” These are our pick for the most unique on the island. Start here and see where your adventures take you.
Kapalua Beach
One of the most well known beaches in Maui, it offers calm, protected waters that are perfect for swimming, and surrounded by coconut palms. Great views of Molokai can be seen on clear days, and whales have been known to congregate off shore during whale season. Located about ten miles north of Lahaina off Highway 30.
Napili Bay Beach
Another well protected spot that is really good for snorkeling and swimming. Beautiful white sand and palm trees, now this is paradise! The beach is off Highway 30 about 9 miles north of Lahaina.
Kama'ole Beach Parks
Three parks in one, this is a great spot for families to come enjoy an afternoon together. Volleyball, waterskiing, snorkeling and diving are all popular at this spot. In addition, lifeguards are on duty for your protection. The small island of Molinkin can be seen sitting offshore as well. The beaches are at the Southern end of South Kihei Road.
Makena Beach
There are two beaches here, separated by an old cinder cone, a remnant of old volcanic activity on the island. The white sand and blue water seem to go on forever, and swimming and snorkeling are both popular here. The beach is at the end of Makena Ala Nui road off Highway 31. Little beach, on the west side of the cone, is informally a clothing optional spot with great body surfing.
Hamoa Beach
Sitting below tall cliffs in Hana, this is a great spot to find seclusion from the more crowded spots. The sand is a unique grey color, a mixture of lava and coral that has been eroded. The swimming is great here, especially during the calm summer months.
Black Rock Beach
This beach is divided into halves by a jutting outcrop of lava, hence the name. Snorkeling and scuba are popular in the clear waters surrounding Black Rock, with easy access from several resorts in the area. You can also enjoy fishing, sailing, and kayaking, along with some good shops and restaurants that are close by.
DT Fleming Beach Park
Another all time favorite, this is especially popular with the body and board surfing crowd. Palm trees offer ample shade when the temperature soars. Expect bigger waves during the winter months. Amenities include picnic tables, grills, showers, restrooms, and lifeguards.
Ho’okipa Beach
Known around the world as a mecca for wind surfing. High winds and big waves make for exciting conditions against which wind surfers test their skills. The swimming isn’t very good because of these same reasons, but it’s a great spot to sit on the beach and enjoy the show.
